Please join us in welcoming Stephen McDaniel as our third speaker series of 2014 at the Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University on Thursday, October 9th. Cocktail and hors d’oeuvres service, courtesy of the Jones School, and sign-in will begin at 6:30pm.

Stephen McDaniel currently serves on the board of directors of Midstates Petroleum Company (NYSE:MPO) and Ultra Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:UPL), both NYSE listed exploration and production companies and is an active private investor.  Mr. McDaniel founded Midstates Petroleum and previously served as its Chairman and CEO.  Mr. McDaniel built Midstates from a start-up company over a period of approximately 10 years before stepping down from the CEO role in anticipation of the company’s initial public offering, which was completed in April of 2012.  Additionally, Mr. McDaniel is a founding investor in and serves as an advisor to Encino Energy, a private Houston based exploration and production company.

Prior to his time with Midstates, Mr. McDaniel spent almost 10 years in the financial services/investment banking industry where he developed techniques for integrating fundamental engineering analyses into the financing and M&A activities of numerous public and private, US and international, energy companies ranging in size from ‘start-ups’ to the ‘super-majors’.  He spent the majority of his investment banking career with Merrill Lynch and left this career as a Managing Director in the global energy and power group in 2004 to dedicate his time to building Midstates Petroleum Company.

Mr. McDaniel began his career with Conoco (now ConocoPhillips) where he spent 13 years in various engineering, operations, and engineering management roles.  His assignments included onshore, offshore, domestic, and international operations.  He developed a novel process for selectively shutting off water production in oil wells and was awarded US Patent #4972906 for this work.  In the latter part of his Conoco career, Mr. McDaniel moved into a corporate business development role.  His position was Vice President of Business Development for Conoco Overseas Oil Company when he left Conoco to join the financial services industry. Mr. McDaniel has a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering and is also actively involved on the executive board of Big Brothers, Big Sisters Lone Star.
